I don't pretend to have all the answers. But lately I've been implementing a little trick that has helped me. I think it can help you too. My agency is growing. We have amazing clients. We also produce a world class conference. The conference and the clients are synergistic events on paper. In execution they are at odds. One takes from the other in time, energy and sweat equity. I needed to clone myself, or find a solution.

I have lots of experience being out of work. It happened to me three times in a two-year span. Five times total throughout my career. I'm only 40, so that's a pretty impressive streak. Also - I split up a business partnership. I didn't read the fine print of our contract. I battled my partner for almost a year. I made almost no money.

Three years ago I launched the first Westchester Digital Summit. Last month Forbes magazine called us one of the "Conferences That Will Keep You Ahead of Marketing Trends This Year." We've hosted over 1000 executives in that time. I'm an extrovert, and I understand the power of networking. What hurts me is to see introverts not capitalize on the opportunity of an event like the summit. So here are 15 practical tips you can use the next time you're at an event. I hope you join us at this year's summit and test them out.

Social media is a spiritual awakening, not a technological one.

/
I’ve been writing a book for the past five months. The book was called “Start Now” and offered detailed accounts on how to engage in social media. I gave advice on how you can find your dream job, market your product or market yourself. I wrote 14 chapters, hired an editor, and then scrapped it all two weeks ago. I started revising my book, because a simple truth dawned on me. None of the advice that I was giving would work if the reader didn’t understand that social media is a digital extension of human beings. That the explosion of social media is a spiritual awakening, not a technological one.

Are We Too Obsessed with Facebook?

/
Yesterday, Mashable posted a phenomenal info-graphic that I thought I’d share with you. What’s fascinating to me isn’t just the statistics about users who have profiles on Facebook. The more exciting information has to do with what we’re doing with Facebook, and just how ingrained into our society the site has become. I’ve mentioned in the past how exciting it is that there are 500million Facebook users globally, but the real key to why Facebook has such an astronomical valuation deals with the idea that of those 500 million 250million log in each day. Facebook has become as much of our daily lives as checking our email.

A Pastor, Italian Guy, & Attorney Walk Into a Bar…in Mahopac, New York

/
The real punch line here is that I have this overwhelming sense that my fifteen minutes of fame is at about minute fourteen. Tuesday I spent another dizzying afternoon at the Fox TV studios. We filmed three segment s (two of which you can see below). The third will air next week sometime, and will feature tips on BlackFriday, and include details on Best Buy, Target, Truman’s Gentlemen’s Groomers, Groupon, and Lifesta. Once again – the people at Fox are amazing. I even ended up at a local watering hole with the producer Jason after we filmed the segments. Awesome. Best part about this whole experience on Tuesday was being able to mention both my buddy Jeremy Lichtenberger, and my hometown Mahopac. While I currently reside in Chappaqua, NY – Mahopac is still near and dear to my heart.

Peddle Downhill: 4 Mistakes to Avoid When Seeking Your Dream Job

/
I remember riding my bike that one summer day with my big brother Mark. We were riding side by side “Chips” style when it started. We’d been casually gliding down a hill around the corner from my house. We were probably on our way to a pick-up baseball game at a friend’s house. Maybe I was 10 and he was 12 – who can remember. What I do remember is that we were gliding down a hill when I decided I wasn’t going fast enough. I wanted to push it a little; you know, drop the hammer. So I started to peddle downhill. Mark, who has always been more of a break down hill type of guy, began to immediately let me know his unease with my sudden burst of peddling fury. As I began pulling past him down the hill I heard his voice trail off as I blew past, and continued down the hill “Chris, you don’t peddle downhill, you BREAK downhill”. I could barely make out the last few words, but I got the gist. I didn’t care, I wanted to peddle. By now I was hunched over, leaning into the wind which was making my eyes tear. I was peddling as hard as I could downhill. It felt amazing; I was pushing myself to the limit. It felt right, it felt comfortable; I was following my bliss, finding my voice, and peddling downhill.
