This post is in answer to a question that always comes up. Especially when I’m discussing launching your personal brand. I mention to everyone that they should have a blog. Most people don’t know how to launch a blog. Today I’m going to give you a peek behind the curtain. Below you can review a video tutorial I created that will walk you through the process of launching your blog.
In the video below I launch a real site. This is not a demo. This is a live screen grab of me going through the actual process of launching a blog. Below the video tutorial I have listed each step I take in a blog post. You can print out the steps, and follow along with the video.
Here are the detailed steps that I take in the video tutorial.
First visit Bluehost. Full disclosure I’m an affiliate of Bluehost. So if you buy hosting services from them, I will receive a commission. Click here. Or just click on the image below:
Select either Starter, Plus or Business Pro. You only need Starter. In the demo I bought Plus. That’s not necessary for your blog. If you already have your own site that’s fine. But you can search for your site as well.
Select your package information. The longer you select (12, 24, or 36 month). The longer you select the cheaper it gets. So the monthly cost at 36 months is the cheapest monthly cost. That’s up to you.
I don’t think you need any of the bells and whistles that they offer here. I don’t get site backup, or search engine jumpstart, or even domain privacy protection. Maybe I should, but if you’re like me and you’re on a budget – I don’t think you NEED them. So let’s pass. If you need an email service provider this may be a good time to select Constant Contact. I use Hubspot for my emails, so you’ll notice that I didn’t select any email service in the tutorial.
Add your credit card information. Submit.
IGNORE the upgrades and URLS that they offer. They are not necessary. I offer a bit of commentary around other domains that may be worth while for you to buy. But I don’t think it’s necessary at this stage.
Congratulations – you’ve bought your URL through Bluehost!
Create a password. I like to let them generate a password for me. I’m horrible at creating passwords that are secure. They will let you know how secure the password it. WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORD.
Your Cloud is Ready! Now it’s time to download and install WordPress.
You will see this Welcome to Bluehost pop-up.
Close the pop-up. Scroll down and look for the WordPress logo. That will look just like this and will say “INSTALL WORDPRESS”
Click on Install WordPress. Then click the green INSTALL button. That looks like this:
Select your domain from the dropdown and select “CHECK DOMAIN”
Click “SHOW ADVANCED OPTIONS” it will look like this: Click Install Now
It will expand to this: you add your site name, your admin Username and Password – WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORD. Your credentials will show up here, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Save these URLS in your browser. This admin URL allows you to have access to the back end of your blog/site. This is the entry point for you. Copy the URL and add it to your favorites.
Purchase a wordpress theme. It will prompt you to buy a wordpress theme. I highly recommend the Enfold theme from themeforest. You’ll have to visit Themeforest site to purchase the Enfold Theme. Full disclosure I’m a Themeforest Affiliate. Which means I make a commission if you purchase this theme. I use this theme for this blog, my agencies site, and for my event’s site. I love the theme, and it’s hugely powerful. I will never recommend a service I don’t use, or love. Just click here to buy your theme. Most are less than $65.
Click on the WordPress Admin URL and login. Bookmark the login.
Review the back end of the blog/site. Visit your site!
Click on APPEARANCE, It will look like this:
Click on Themes it will look like this
Click Add New
Select “Enfold.zip” file. While it’s installing your Enfold theme it will look like this: It will say it’s unpacking and installing your theme.
Click install now
Set up Enfold with your logo, and favicon
Add your first blog post!
Obviously you can see that I uploaded some evergreen photos into the Enfold theme blog – but we’re up and running!
