Wrapping it up

I get asked about my TEDx talk often. Not because anyone is enamored by my talk — mostly because they want to share their own story with the world, and they want to know how I did it.

Many of us think that because we haven’t created a unicorn company, started a nonprofit when we were 10, or conducted a 30-year-long study on happiness we don’t deserve to stand on a TEDx stage.

This is mostly because I’m nobody special, and yet I was still able to deliver a well-received talk.

I’m going to show you how to create a TEDx talk that not only conveys a message but also connects with the audience.

Finding Your Core Message

The genesis of a memorable TEDx talk lies in selecting a topic that resonates deeply, not just with you, but with your future audience. Imagine crafting a talk that, decades from now, would still fill your loved ones with pride. This was my starting point.

I imagined my two daughters as grown women, sitting down to watch my talk. Would this talk make them proud of me? Would the message I’m sharing still resonate?

I was on a quest for a theme that embodied personal values and universal truths. Inspired by the works of Brené Brown and a commitment to transparency, the theme “Vulnerability Works” emerged, showcasing the power of authentic connection.

The Crucial Role of Community

No TEDx talk comes to life in isolation. The feedback from a community, be it a business networking group or a circle of trusted peers, is invaluable. Presenting your initial ideas and being receptive to constructive criticism allows for the refinement of your message and the strengthening of your narrative arc. This iterative process of sharing, listening, and revising is a testament to the communal spirit that shapes impactful talks.

It was a painful process for sure, but I delivered my TEDx talk to a business networking group, which offered me candid and essential feedback. If you’re thinking about delivering a talk — I strongly recommend you do the same.

The Art of Storytelling

At the heart of every TEDx talk is storytelling. The ability to weave personal anecdotes into a cohesive narrative not only captivates but also humanizes your message. I pick my stories and use them as anchors to help memorize what I’m saying.

I emphasize memorizing the ‘anchors’ and ‘connective tissue’ of stories, allowing for a more organic and engaging delivery. This approach underscores the importance of authenticity over rote memorization, inviting warmth and genuine emotion into your presentation. What I mean is – if you know the general theme and ideas, your delivery doesn’t have to be perfect — and in fact, it shouldn’t. It should feel like you’re talking to a friend in their living room.

Vulnerability as Strength

Perhaps the most poignant moment in any TEDx talk is the raw, unguarded expression of emotion. While I hadn’t planned to, I did get emotional while on stage. For my talk, it amplified the authenticity and impact of my message. It was a powerful reminder that vulnerability is not a weakness but a conduit for a deeper connection with your audience. I encourage you to tap into the emotion of your TEDx talk idea. What excites you about this idea? If you can live there —in that emotion while delivering your talk, it will surely be a hit.

The Backbone of Preparation

Behind the scenes of a seamless TEDx presentation is an unwavering commitment to preparation. Utilizing tools like flashcards and dedicating time to rehearse, even in the face of personal challenges, I was able to build the foundation for a confident and polished performance. Translation – I did the speech over, and over and over and over and over and … over. Until I could recite it in my sleep. The preparation relaxed me — then when I relaxed it allowed me to tell the stories with genuine warmth while on stage.

The true essence of preparation lies in its ability to provide a safety net, allowing you to navigate the unexpected with grace and adaptability.

Wrapping it up

Creating a TEDx talk is more than just public speaking; it’s a journey of personal discovery, community engagement, and storytelling mastery.

It’s about finding a message that resonates, sharing it with a community for refinement, and delivering it with authenticity and vulnerability.

As you contemplate embarking on your TEDx journey, remember that the most impactful talks are those that come from a place of genuine passion and personal truth.

I hope this story inspires you to share your narratives, embrace your vulnerabilities, and connect with others in a way that only you can.

Here’s to finding your voice and making a difference, one talk at a time.

Keep up the good work,

Chris
